Episode 022 Show Notes

Welcome back, this week I have something very special to bring to you.

I decided to go into my archives and pull a very special interview I did a few years ago with a dear friend and colleague Rita Deo Barber.

Rita was a presenter on a 3 day live virtual event I hosted called the Monetize Your Gifts Masterclass and she shared some very valuable content that I know is just as fresh and relevant as when she first presented.

On the interview, we talked about the power of visualization, asking for what you want.

Using social media responsibly and how to deal with those pesky naysayers… you know those people that you may have in your life, although I hope you don’t, those folks who tell you that you’re crazy for going for your dreams.

I created a downloadable summary guide to accompany today’s episode to grab your copy click on the link below

>> CLICK HERE to Download The Summary Sheet

Rita’s Key Highlights:
Key #1 – Know where you want to go ~ you’ll most likely change course on your journey, but don’t let that stop you from making a decision and getting started.

Key #2 – Begin with the end mind ~ don’t worry over not having all the details worked out on how you’ll bring your vision into fruition. When you’re first getting started focus your mental energy on getting clear on where you want to end up and take action.

Key #3 – Get detailed ~ life’s magic happens in the details. So many times we focus our energy on getting the thing(s) we say we want but it’s important to not overlook the details. For example let’s say you want to start business.

I suggest setting aside some time to get quiet and visualize what that looks like. For example, what kind of business are you running, what are the customers like, how are you serving them, who’s working with you and for you, what does your physical space look like (are you in an high rise office, at home or by the pool at a five star resort?)

It’s important that you flesh out as many details as possible. Don’t leave anything out! Once you’ve gotten clear on the details sit with your visualization for a few minutes everyday. How does it feel?!

This is very important. We’re motivated by our feelings, so allow yourself time to ‘feel’ the experience of running your ideal business.

Episode 021 Show Notes:

Here are the 5 Common List Building Mistakes Creative Entrepreneurs Make That Keeps Their List Small & Unresponsive.

You might be making one or more of them, use this list as a guide to maximize your blog’s traffic so you can grow a responsive list eager to invest in your products and services.

1. Having Only One Freebie

This one is pretty self-explanatory.
Your offers should speak to very specific problems. For example, let’s say you’re a personal trainer specializing in weight loss.

The advice that you would give someone struggling to lose a life-altering amount of weight would be very different than the client that’s bored with their current routine and as a result, has been slacking on their exercise regime.

The language, especially the headline as well as the rest of your copy must speak directly to your ideal customer from where they are now. Gone are the days of “one size fit’s all marketing”

Depending upon your industry and offerings you may have offerings tailored specifically based on gender, age, skill level, and income just to name a few but whatever you do don’t limit your solution to solely these criteria.

Dive deeper and undercover specifically what your ideal audience’s pain points or road blocks are. What’s the best way to find out? Ask them!

Get on the phone if you can, or you can do this by email or messenger and ask the people you want to work with what’s stopping them from getting what they want as it relates to how you help people.

As far as deciding what delivery option is best for your freebie I’m a strong advocate of checklists. They are easy to create, highly desirable by most audiences and a great foundation for spin-off lead magnets.
For example, you can:

  • Record yourself expanding on the points in your checklist via audio or video, combine the two and repackage it into a mini-course.
  • Quizzes or assessments are very popular and more engaging than passively reading a checklist or ebook or listening to an audio recording or watching a video.
  • Start a private Facebook group and offer a weekly LIVE session taking group members through individual points from your checklist. Use your checklist to teach, answer questions, invite attendees and replay watchers to check out your paid offer.
  • Webinars are an art, and when done correctly make for perfect second level freebies. Use your checklist as your core freebie and use it to teach from on your webinar.
  • Multi-day mini courses are very popular. Focus on helping your audience achieve one piece of their bigger goal over say a 5-day period and at of your automated course lead participants to your paid offer.

This segues perfectly into the next point…. but before we get to point #2

Did you know there are options for over 15 different lead magnet options that can be mixed and matched to suit your ideal communication style and your audiences preferred learning modality? How to Create An Irresistible List Building Freebie The Easy Way Masterclass Helps With This: Inside the Masterclass we have an entire training on how to uncover the perfect lead magnet for you and your audience!

2. Not Being Specific Enough With The Problem Your Freebie Solves

Using our personal trainer example again. If our trainer’s ideal clients are brides to be trying to lose weight for their wedding day that’s a good start but it’s not enough.

We want to find out specifically where she’s struggling.

The best question you can ask is: “What’s standing in the way of you experiencing what you want?” Maybe she reveals that she’s fine with going to the gym, she doesn’t miss her scheduled workouts, but she’s noticing that she’s mindlessly snacking.

Perhaps she’s revealed that she’s stress eating, equivalent to sleepwalking but in this scenario, she’s tuned out how much food she’s actually consuming.

For example, a few chips quickly can turn into scarfing down an entire bag, especially late at night when the house is quiet with very few distractions.

If our freebie spoke specifically to that problem do you see how our bride to be would be far more receptive to opting-in for something like this than something very generic?

Which of these would call out to you if you fit this audience profile?

3. Failing To Provide A Quick Win

The first time I heard this was on Amy Porterfield’s amazing podcast she talked about when teaching your audience something that can help them improve their lives how we should provide our audience with a quick win.

So what’s a quick win? Let’s say you teach entrepreneurs how to get clients through cold calling perhaps a quick win might be a special report of cold calling scripts. Or how to reach out to an influencer to ask them to be on your podcast or write the forward for your book. A quick win could be “What to say to an influencer” email templates.

But I want to encourage you to go even deeper with your quick win. A real win is only a win if they take action and get results.

So let’s say for our personal trainer that works with brides to be she physically sends through the mail an actual trash bag to rid their cupboards of unhealthy foods and a flash drive loaded with shopping lists, recipes and meal plans for healthy replacements.

Maybe with the garbage bag, she includes a flash drive loaded with the PDF shopping list, a couple of recipes and a playlist of meditations to help our emotional eater calm down.

If you teach WordPress your quick win could be a WordPress template and video tutorial on how to install it.

If you teach candle making maybe your quick win could be a package of wicks and a sampler of different waxes.

If you help people set up Facebook ads maybe your quick win could be to show them how to come up a headline for their ads or design a graphic or find audiences to target a new ad.

Whatever you select have fun with this process and get creative. The more wins you can provide from the start the more likely your prospect is to take the next step with you.

4. Not Having An Onboarding Plan In Place For New Subscribers

There’s a new term in the online marketing place called Onboarding, it’s basically a system for welcoming new subscribers that have joined your list. Think of it like orientation.

Remember the saying, you have one opportunity to make a good first impression. That’s especially true in this instance.

What happens immediately after a new subscriber joins your list determines how they move through not only your content but your social media channels. But most important if they open future emails from you and when/if they do what actions they take or not.

It’s super important at this stage of the relationship that you reach out, ask questions and invite your growing tribe to engage with you that way you can uncover how you can better serve their needs.

With that mind, the most important opportunity and often the most overlooked page on most online marketers onboarding sequence is their “Thank Page”

Your thank you page the first page new subscribers are immediately directed to after opting in for your Irresistible Freebie. On this page, you could provide a super short video that welcomes new members and guides their next action steps.

Personally, I recommend creating a complementary or fixed term closed or private Facebook group where you have the opportunity to deepen the relationship.

You can pin a post on the top of your group page welcoming them to the group, giving them the lay of the land and introducing them to the rest of the group.

Next is your indoctrination email. In this first message (you’ll want to do 4, maybe even 5 things)

1. Provide a link to the thing they opted-in for. This is an absolute must, miss this is and your trust level takes a serious nosedive.

2. Invite them to reply to your 1st message introducing themselves to you. Ask them why they opted in for your freebie, what they’re struggling with or hope to achieve and what do they want next.

3. Share a little of your story. How and why did you come to teach what you’re offering?

4. What steps should they take next? I already mentioned joining your Facebook group if you have one (and you should, I’m just saying)

5. If you have a welcome mat offer (some internet marketers refer to them as Tripwires) whatever you want to call them this is often your first introduction to a low-cost entry level paid offer.

*Keep in mind number five isn’t a requirement but should you decide to make this a part of your onboarding sequence here’s a great opportunity to present it.
And if you do it absolutely must compliment your Irresistible Freebie.

How to Create An Irresistible List Building Freebie The Easy Way Masterclass Helps You Avoid This: Inside the Masterclass we have an entire module devoted to walking you through how to create your welcome email including WHAT you SHOULD have in it, the elements of a powerful thank you page and HOW to use it to encourage your growing audience to further engage with you.

Click Here To Learn More About The Irresistible Freebie Creators Masterclass

5. Not Positioning Your Freebie To Flow Naturally Into Your Paid Offer

Now like I just introduced in optional step 5 of the onboarding sequence regardless if you opt to offer a low-cost entry level paid opportunity or a high ticket program or service like I mentioned your freebie must compliment your paid offer.

One thing many content producers and digital course creators do is to pull their freebie from their paid offer. For example, If you sell digital courses like I do extract a piece from your paid content and offer it for free.

I offer a paid course where I help my students not only create an irresistible freebie that not only creates and grow their email list but in my paid program I give you all of the support tools and training needed to get your freebie out there and collecting leads from high targeted Buy Ready leads.

I offer a multi-step checklist as a freebie that introduces the first and most important steps to take ensure that the freebie they create is perfect for the audience they want to serve.

Now Can I Ask You Something?

Let’s keep the conversation going! Talk to me on Instagram!

#1 Which tip/trick resonated with you the most?

#2 Did you learn anything new about creating a lead generating freebie?

#3 What kind of freebie are thinking about creating next?

DM on Instagram and I’ll reply with a special audio message customized just for you.

Episode 020: How To Write Attention Grabbing Headlines That’ll Ensure Your Next Freebie Is Highly Irresistible

Episode 020 Show Notes:

If you listened to episode Episode 013: Choose! My Personal Take On Ryan Levesque’s New Book & How Creatives Can Use It To Choose The Best Idea For Them

And on the episode, I did a video training how to use educational sites like Udemy, Skillshare, and Amazon to start collecting comments in the review section of those courses and books.

I shared a technique called copy stocking what you create a spreadsheet to record the actual words people are saying about a particular product or course. On this spreadsheet, you want to breakdown what they like but more importantly, what they don’t like or wish were better about the course they’re reviewing.

This information is gold because you can literally use their words to define and shape your headlines, headlines you can use for blog post titles, course titles, emails, social media posts.

Of course, the best form of copy you’ll ever gather comes directly from the mouth of people you’ve worked within the form of recorded telephone conversations and I highly doing this is you can. But you can get the ball rolling with scouring online platforms.

You also can get a lot of valuable intel from forums and Facebook comments, especially the ones inside of groups.

But for the purpose of this illustration, I’m going to focus on Udemy an online educational platform for course producers

Here’s a comment I found on a watercolor painting course I found on Udemy.com
AS A BEGINNER COURSE, IT SUCCEEDS IN REMOVING THE FEAR OF FAILURE. THE SCENES ARE VERY SIMPLE AND EASY. HOWEVER, MOST OF THE FINISHED PAINTINGS LOOK MORE LIKE CARTOONS THAN REALISTIC LANDSCAPES.

Here’s a re-write:
3 Quick Ways to Confidently Paint Watercolor Landscapes (That Look Realistic & Don’t Look Like Cartoons)

In my research, I found several comments regarding confidence, here’s one comment in particular that stood out: Gaining a lot of confidence that I can paint pictures that I will be happy with.

Here’s a headline formula that really works
How to get __________, without ________

Let’s apply this formula to a potential topic for your ILBF (Irresistible List Building Freebie)

Let’s say you teach watercolor painting for beginners, what’s a major pain point they have?

Let’s say that they struggle with their confidence, and a more specific complaint or struggle is they feel their paintings come out looking like cartoons.

3 Simple and Easy Steps to Confidently Paint More Realistic (Landscapes) you could replace with any specific focus or use none at all, for example, you could replace Landscapes for Hands or any other body part, or dogs, flowers) with Watercolors (That Don’t Look Like Cartoons)

Hot Tip: If you know a particular area of struggle your ideal avatar is experiencing don’t be afraid to call it out. Specificity $ells!

Examples:
3 Simple and Easy Steps to Painting With Watercolors Confidently (That Don’t Look Like Cartoons)

How to Paint Landscapes With Watercolors Confidently, without your paintings coming out looking like cartoons

3 Simple and Easy Steps to Painting Realistic Looking Landscapes with Watercolors, without your paintings coming out looking like cartoons

Another headline formula is the headline with a sub-headline separated by a semi-colon.

The reason why breaking up a long headline with a semi-colon works is that it gives you the opportunity to combine two ideas, concerns, or desires that your ideal customer needs to read or ear to feel like your lead magnet is ideal for them.

Using this method you can combine two headlines that could, in theory, stand-alone, but when combined make for a stronger headline that really has the power to stand out.

For example, the first part (before the semicolon) can address how to get ____ and the second part (after the semicolon) is the what.

Episode 019 Show Notes:

If you listened to Episode 018 of the podcast, I introduced 3 Questions You Must Ask Yourself Before You Create Your Profit Driven List Building Freebie and why that’s so important, if you didn’t, I highly you stop listening to this episode of the podcast and do that first so you’ll be better prepared for what I have for you today.

In that episode, I talked about why it’s super important to give your ideal customer avatar a QVW (quick valuable win) immediately after they opt-in for your freebie and why your freebie must accomplish this if you want to properly position your paid offer.

Why it’s important especially in the beginning stages to focus on getting clear on ideal avatars top of mind problem, the one they most want to have solved and knowing how to language it which I’m going to go into greater depth on this episode of the podcast.

Up until now all of the episodes in this series has been primarily focused on showing you why it’s important to have a highly irresistible freebie (ie. your lead magnet) to connect with your audience, grow an email list that leads to sales and creative and financial freedom.

Just in case you missed those earlier episodes let’s do a quick recap to get you up to speed

In episode 015: Ultimate Guide To Creating An Irresistible List Building Freebie (part 1) I shared
* What is an Irresistible Freebie?
* What makes a Freebie Irresistible?
* The benefits of having an Irresistible Freebie?

In episode 016: Ultimate Guide To Creating An Irresistible List Building Freebie (part 2) I shared
* How I added over 600 plus new subscribers to my email list in less than 30 days
* 15 Totally Irresistible Freebie Ideas!
* I even gave you a complete list of inspirational ideas in my Ultimate Guide to Creating An Irresistible Freebie Blog Post

Then in episode 017, I did a pretty extensive interview on how to Fill Your Email List With ‘Buy Ready’ Leads Using Quizzes and Assessments with Pet Behaviorist Daniele Largo

So episodes 015, 016 and 017 are what I consider “the what!” and that’s why I decided for episodes 018 and 019 to focus on the ‘who’ (who your ideal customer is and how you best serve them) and why (getting this right will ultimately determine your success)!

It’s so important to get this right from the start and that’s why I’m devoting this week and next weeks episodes to what I feel is frequently the most overlooked part of the Irresistible List Building Freebie making process.

Knowing who your ideal customer is, why your freebie must speak to them and how it’s going to position them into becoming what I call, “Buy Ready” leads.

It’s really sexy to get excited about the “what” meaning the deliverable, for example, after listening to episode 017 with Daniele Largo you might have become super inspired to create a quiz or assessment. Or maybe you’ve been writing an ebook or designing a mini-course, or thinking about launching a Facebook group. But not so fast!

First, you want to get clear on the specific audience you want to speak to and more specially the problem or desire that audience (ideal customer avatar) wants and is actively looking for a solution before I get into that I want to talk about what inspired the focus of this episode.

We few weeks ago I participated in an online training by James Wedmore of the Mind Your Business Podcast called Nail Your Niche (I highly recommend it, I’ll put the link to it in the show notes, it’s around $300 and worth every penny, it’s not an affiliate so I’m not being paid to recommend it)

And in that training, James taught a simple framework for choosing a profitable niche and I’m going to share just a little of what I learned from him with you.

But first, I want to quickly review the benefits of choosing a profitable niche
Benefits of choosing your niche

  • Determines your highest skill set, one that’s based on your greatest passion and how you talk about yourself.
  • Helps you get clear on who is struggling with the problem, issue or desire your skillset is most qualified to solve
  • Forces you to get focused and clear on the specific issues so can more easily create content that would appeal to them like Irresistible List Building Freebies and other valuable content like blog posts, podcast interviews, and what you post on social media
  • Ultimately shapes your paid product or service, how you write copy for it and how you talk about it and you deliver it

Questions from James Wedmore’s Niche Training on identifying your niche.

  • Who do you serve?
  • How you serve them?
  • Who Specifically You Serve?
  • What problem Specifically do you Solve?
  • How Specifically You Serve Them?
  • Why Specifically you?
  • Where are they right now?

Your answers are a great place to start before you create your Irresistible List Building Freebie, so you could ask your audience (if you have current clients or students) or research online Where are they right now?

For example, if in your research you uncover that the majority of your ideal avatar says “I’m struggling with the confidence to paint watercolors without ruining my canvases” then that could be the focus of your freebie.

As a matter of fact, you could actually use that comment in the title of your Irresistible List Building Freebie.

I’ll talk more about this in greater depth how to craft an attention-grabbing headline in episode 020 of the podcast, in the meantime try your hand at crafting one using this sample template, keeping the following formula in mind, never forget episode 015, your ideal customer wants two things,

1. The thing they want, and

2. To avoid the thing ‘they think’ that’s getting in the way of them having it.

Nailing the answer to both of these in your headline will make your freebie stand out.

Here’s a headline formula that really works and a few examples
How to get (result) __________, without ________

Here’s another iteration
____ (fill in with a number) ways to get __________, without ________

“How to Confidently Paint Watercolor Landscapes (That Look Realistic & Don’t Look Like Cartoons)”
-or-
“3 Quick Ways to Confidently Paint Watercolor Landscapes (That Look Realistic & Don’t Look Like Cartoons)”

So again, stay tuned for episode 020 of the podcast where we’re going to do a deep dive on how to write attention-grabbing headlines that make your freebies speak directly to your ideal customer avatar.

Lastly, I want to talk about the big lie that stops creative entrepreneurs from choosing a niche. It’s this falsehood that says, if I choose something, (ie. if I’m known for something) I can’t change it.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Here’s the deal, your niche isn’t solely about your title, or what you call yourself.

It’s about the problem you solve and the solution you provide and your ideal customer’s willingness and ability to pay you for your product or service.

Your niche is the exact solution you provide to a specific and defined audience that has the desire and the means to pay for your product or service.

Once you define what your greatest skill set is, shift your focus away from ‘You’ to ‘Who’ needs and has the means to pay for what you can deliver you’ll be well on way to defining your ideal niche.

Too many people myself included become way too caught up in needless worry over choosing the “wrong niche” the primary reason (I refer to as the big lie) is “what if I choose the wrong one?” Or, worse, “What if I’m closing off opportunities to serve and sell my product/service to a wider audience if I niche myself down too far?”

For the sake of example, let’s say you teach acrylic pouring. More specifically you teach furniture designers how to apply acrylic pouring techniques to their designs.

If you created an online course specifically for furniture designers that want to learn how to apply acrylic pouring techniques to elevate their designs so they can sell their pieces for a higher price, would you be cutting off other audiences (ie. non-furniture designers) curious about learning this technique?

No, someone interested in this specific style of painting could still sign up for your course.

Does this mean you’ll have to adjust your curriculum to accommodate other audiences? No, not unless you want to or you could create different iterations of your course for different mediums.

The bottom line: You’re not married for life to a niche, you can change it or apply an established niche to different audiences. It’s your business, it’s your life, it’s your call!

Begin with the end in mind then reverse engineer your paid offer to your free offer

* What are you selling? A book, a course, or paid service like copywriting, photography, or maybe graphic design?
* Your free offer must ultimately lead to your paid offer, and if you don’t have a paid offer yet, extend an invitation for an experience that will allow them to engage with you like a Facebook group
* Other options? A free or paid online workshop and if you have a Facebook group you can run it inside your group
* Give them a quick-win that feels valuable and sets up your paid offer. For example, if you’re a service provider like a copywriter you could offer to do a free rewrite of an existing piece of content with the option to purchase if they want to use it
* For example, if your freebie is a checklist take one of the items on your list, (something that relates to the problem your avatar wants to be solved) make sure it’s something that connects to your paid offer and something you could teach on via a live video conference or a one on one consulting session

Stanford Professor and behavior expert BJ Fogg whose concept of “easy wins” suggests

“For people to be motivated to continue pursuing any action, they need to experience a set of immediate and observable wins”

Not just the low hanging fruit…

But the lowest, juiciest, most immediately satiating fruit

When deciding on the focus of your freebie think about a top of mind issue your ideal avatar is struggling with, something that’s an immediate pain point, desire or concern they’re experiencing that positions your solution as an obvious no brainer. When someone reads your headline it will push the person with the issue your offer solves over the edge to sign up for.

What’s the quickest, most valuable win your prospect can gain from using a certain feature of your freebie/product/service?

Get this right and you dramatically increase the chances they’ll purchase your next offer.

Episode 017 Show Notes:

I am beyond thrilled to introduce you to my special guest today. Daniele and I met at a networking event about nine years ago and from the second we locked eyes we’ve been pretty much inseparable. Since that first meeting, I’ve seen her go from self-publishing a children’s book of illustrators based on her beloved cat Beijo who sadly is no longer with us.

But she has a new fur baby in the family which I’m sure she’ll speak about in the interview.

Fast forward she’s grown from publisher to become one of the sought after Pet Behaviorist in the Southern California area, and her trajectory is nothing short of ‘divine’ we’ll explain in the interview.

One thing that absolutely I love about Daniele is how she bucks the traditional “this how to do business” system and has done so with great success.

When everyone is going right, she goes left and it’s continually paid off for her which is how her email list grows every day with ‘Buy Ready’ leads using a Pet Personality Assessment.

Assessments and quizzes are one of the if not the highest converting freebies you can employ in your list building activities. Why? Well as I mentioned in Episode 016 I personally feel the reason why they’re so popular is simple.

Curiosity!

We all want to learn or confirm something about ourselves and quizzes and assessments help us do that in a fun and engaging way. That’s what I love most about what Daniele and they work she’s done to grow her list.

There’s probably not a single cat or dog owner that’s not curious about their pet’s behavior and if you think about it, how could it not work?

Pet owners are deeply loyal to their furry family members and will do practically anything to experience better communications with them and it’s because of that I believe why her Pet Personality Assessment had been such a hit.
