Episode 021 Show Notes:
Here are the 5 Common List Building Mistakes Creative Entrepreneurs Make That Keeps Their List Small & Unresponsive.
You might be making one or more of them, use this list as a guide to maximize your blog’s traffic so you can grow a responsive list eager to invest in your products and services.
1. Having Only One Freebie
This one is pretty self-explanatory.
Your offers should speak to very specific problems. For example, let’s say you’re a personal trainer specializing in weight loss.
The advice that you would give someone struggling to lose a life-altering amount of weight would be very different than the client that’s bored with their current routine and as a result, has been slacking on their exercise regime.
The language, especially the headline as well as the rest of your copy must speak directly to your ideal customer from where they are now. Gone are the days of “one size fit’s all marketing”
Depending upon your industry and offerings you may have offerings tailored specifically based on gender, age, skill level, and income just to name a few but whatever you do don’t limit your solution to solely these criteria.
Dive deeper and undercover specifically what your ideal audience’s pain points or road blocks are. What’s the best way to find out? Ask them!
Get on the phone if you can, or you can do this by email or messenger and ask the people you want to work with what’s stopping them from getting what they want as it relates to how you help people.
As far as deciding what delivery option is best for your freebie I’m a strong advocate of checklists. They are easy to create, highly desirable by most audiences and a great foundation for spin-off lead magnets.
For example, you can:
- Record yourself expanding on the points in your checklist via audio or video, combine the two and repackage it into a mini-course.
- Quizzes or assessments are very popular and more engaging than passively reading a checklist or ebook or listening to an audio recording or watching a video.
- Start a private Facebook group and offer a weekly LIVE session taking group members through individual points from your checklist. Use your checklist to teach, answer questions, invite attendees and replay watchers to check out your paid offer.
- Webinars are an art, and when done correctly make for perfect second level freebies. Use your checklist as your core freebie and use it to teach from on your webinar.
- Multi-day mini courses are very popular. Focus on helping your audience achieve one piece of their bigger goal over say a 5-day period and at of your automated course lead participants to your paid offer.
This segues perfectly into the next point…. but before we get to point #2

2. Not Being Specific Enough With The Problem Your Freebie Solves
Using our personal trainer example again. If our trainer’s ideal clients are brides to be trying to lose weight for their wedding day that’s a good start but it’s not enough.
We want to find out specifically where she’s struggling.
The best question you can ask is: “What’s standing in the way of you experiencing what you want?” Maybe she reveals that she’s fine with going to the gym, she doesn’t miss her scheduled workouts, but she’s noticing that she’s mindlessly snacking.
Perhaps she’s revealed that she’s stress eating, equivalent to sleepwalking but in this scenario, she’s tuned out how much food she’s actually consuming.
For example, a few chips quickly can turn into scarfing down an entire bag, especially late at night when the house is quiet with very few distractions.
If our freebie spoke specifically to that problem do you see how our bride to be would be far more receptive to opting-in for something like this than something very generic?
Which of these would call out to you if you fit this audience profile?

3. Failing To Provide A Quick Win
The first time I heard this was on Amy Porterfield’s amazing podcast she talked about when teaching your audience something that can help them improve their lives how we should provide our audience with a quick win.
So what’s a quick win? Let’s say you teach entrepreneurs how to get clients through cold calling perhaps a quick win might be a special report of cold calling scripts. Or how to reach out to an influencer to ask them to be on your podcast or write the forward for your book. A quick win could be “What to say to an influencer” email templates.
But I want to encourage you to go even deeper with your quick win. A real win is only a win if they take action and get results.
So let’s say for our personal trainer that works with brides to be she physically sends through the mail an actual trash bag to rid their cupboards of unhealthy foods and a flash drive loaded with shopping lists, recipes and meal plans for healthy replacements.
Maybe with the garbage bag, she includes a flash drive loaded with the PDF shopping list, a couple of recipes and a playlist of meditations to help our emotional eater calm down.
If you teach WordPress your quick win could be a WordPress template and video tutorial on how to install it.
If you teach candle making maybe your quick win could be a package of wicks and a sampler of different waxes.
If you help people set up Facebook ads maybe your quick win could be to show them how to come up a headline for their ads or design a graphic or find audiences to target a new ad.
Whatever you select have fun with this process and get creative. The more wins you can provide from the start the more likely your prospect is to take the next step with you.
4. Not Having An Onboarding Plan In Place For New Subscribers
There’s a new term in the online marketing place called Onboarding, it’s basically a system for welcoming new subscribers that have joined your list. Think of it like orientation.
Remember the saying, you have one opportunity to make a good first impression. That’s especially true in this instance.
What happens immediately after a new subscriber joins your list determines how they move through not only your content but your social media channels. But most important if they open future emails from you and when/if they do what actions they take or not.
It’s super important at this stage of the relationship that you reach out, ask questions and invite your growing tribe to engage with you that way you can uncover how you can better serve their needs.
With that mind, the most important opportunity and often the most overlooked page on most online marketers onboarding sequence is their “Thank Page”
Your thank you page the first page new subscribers are immediately directed to after opting in for your Irresistible Freebie. On this page, you could provide a super short video that welcomes new members and guides their next action steps.
Personally, I recommend creating a complementary or fixed term closed or private Facebook group where you have the opportunity to deepen the relationship.
You can pin a post on the top of your group page welcoming them to the group, giving them the lay of the land and introducing them to the rest of the group.
Next is your indoctrination email. In this first message (you’ll want to do 4, maybe even 5 things)
1. Provide a link to the thing they opted-in for. This is an absolute must, miss this is and your trust level takes a serious nosedive.
2. Invite them to reply to your 1st message introducing themselves to you. Ask them why they opted in for your freebie, what they’re struggling with or hope to achieve and what do they want next.
3. Share a little of your story. How and why did you come to teach what you’re offering?
4. What steps should they take next? I already mentioned joining your Facebook group if you have one (and you should, I’m just saying)
5. If you have a welcome mat offer (some internet marketers refer to them as Tripwires) whatever you want to call them this is often your first introduction to a low-cost entry level paid offer.
*Keep in mind number five isn’t a requirement but should you decide to make this a part of your onboarding sequence here’s a great opportunity to present it.
And if you do it absolutely must compliment your Irresistible Freebie.
How to Create An Irresistible List Building Freebie The Easy Way Masterclass Helps You Avoid This: Inside the Masterclass we have an entire module devoted to walking you through how to create your welcome email including WHAT you SHOULD have in it, the elements of a powerful thank you page and HOW to use it to encourage your growing audience to further engage with you.

5. Not Positioning Your Freebie To Flow Naturally Into Your Paid Offer
Now like I just introduced in optional step 5 of the onboarding sequence regardless if you opt to offer a low-cost entry level paid opportunity or a high ticket program or service like I mentioned your freebie must compliment your paid offer.
One thing many content producers and digital course creators do is to pull their freebie from their paid offer. For example, If you sell digital courses like I do extract a piece from your paid content and offer it for free.
I offer a paid course where I help my students not only create an irresistible freebie that not only creates and grow their email list but in my paid program I give you all of the support tools and training needed to get your freebie out there and collecting leads from high targeted Buy Ready leads.
I offer a multi-step checklist as a freebie that introduces the first and most important steps to take ensure that the freebie they create is perfect for the audience they want to serve.
