I recently happened upon this quote by American modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on modern visual arts.
“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”
-Martha Graham
This quote written by such a prolific icon (far ahead her time) brings me full circle to why I do the work I do.
My creative expression as a photographer, explorer, writer and coach to creative entrepreneurs is far more than how I make a living. It’s why I live.
My goal ~ to be the kind of person who lives in and of the moment, to always seek fresh and innovative opportunities to express my creativity. To release fear over how my work will be received or worries over idleness appearing as a premonition to the death of my muse.
As Graham says, our role is to keep our channels open and to permit feelings of unrest or dissatisfaction to serve as a motivator to explore our passions deeper, not to be viewed as an indicator to stop exploring.
Coaches Challenge: Whether you are launching a new venture, preparing work for a new show or exhibition or attending a web class ~ I invite you to embrace the entire process, including feelings of resistance. For resistance if channeled properly can used as fuel, the same as inspiration.
For my final thought: Become comfortable with being uncomfortable and know that support is always available whenever you need it.
I’d love to hear your thoughts:)
